A wiry-limbed Michael Peterson spears beyond the lip, beneath a red masthead. Meanwhile, the anchored coverline makes it clear that MP is cashing in while he’s running hot. In 1975 he was on a ruthless winning streak and had legitimate claim to tagline ‘best surfer in the world’. Inside the issue, Wayne Lynch sits down for his first interview in years after dodging Vietnam conscription and media overkill. He’s still recovering from Malaria and a motorcycle accident in Bali when he tells Phil Jarratt, “Everything ever written about me has been bullshit.” A young Shaun Thomson finishes runner-up to MP at Bells. Shaun has already completed his year of compulsory military training in South Africa (thankfully he could still surf) and is poised to dominate the world scene. TF talks Steve Cooney through seven of his boards, ranging from 6’4” to 8’4” and in the letters page Katie complains, “guys push us off waves just because we’re chicks.”
