This pitching wave, located on the opposite side of the Teahupo’o Reef pass, is one of the prettiest and most unique breaking waves I’ve ever shot. Usually on a big swell this reef is out of control and closes out, but on this day the swell was so small. The direction changed with each little peak, and as it hit the fingers of the reef it sucked below sea level, bent and twisted as it broke. Virtually every wave was different. Different thicknesses, different angles, some closed out, some pitched into gaping tubes. It was mesmerizing.
