After a taste of contest success and prize money, 15-year-old Guy’s life-plan is pretty straight forward. “I’m heading to The Islands to get some tubes and if I haven’t got any money I guess won’t be eating too well.”     \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMeanwhile, after an east coast road trip, S.Lane arrives in Byron and claims ‘Boredom reigns supreme’ and the cane toads are multiplying. Celebrated scribe, Phil Jarratt, assumes the editorial helm in place of American John Grissim, and thus begins a golden era of Tracks. Out-going Grissim happily refers to himself as a septic tank, while the list of words he has proudly added to his vocabulary Down Under includes ‘Shaggin Wagon’, ‘strewth’ and ‘portable piss-ups’. Opposite Grissim’s outro a smiling woman appears in a quarter page ad wearing a pair of early Quiksilver boardshorts and a tag line that invites customers to ‘Slip into a pair and feel it’. It’s the mid 70s and it seems there is still so much to explore. In one of the magazine’s most evocative lines Geoff Watson writes, “There is a land as far from this country as a man’s dream can carry him.” Meanwhile, Phil Jarratt has emerged as Tracks’ number one scribe. In Hawaii for the summer, he parties hard in Honolulu, attends a polo match and gets bailed up by cops right before surfing Ala Moana bowl. In the interview with ‘rubberman’, Larry Bertlemann, Larry claims he tries to do everything on a wave, “roller-coasters and cutbacks and I’m trying to get down this 360 thing.”  In California Jarratt travels up the west coast, riffs on the US surf scene, and drops in on skate visionary Tom Sims; together they ride skateboards down the winding hills of Montecito. In the issue Albe Falzon writes, “He lives at Kirra and knows exactly what each wave is going to do. He doesn’t fight it but seems to fit into its curves and flow with its energy. He has a beautiful feeling for the wave and the wave for him.” When MP swings into a stretched Kirra line, Albe is on hand, filming for the project that will become ‘Morning of The Earth’. As the wave briefly slackens its pace, MP tilts his board to full rail and bends his sinewy frame through a blistering cutback, leaving a trail of spray and a whip of hair behind. Going through the footage later, Falzon senses he might have something special and lifts the frame-grab for the Feb’ 1972 Tracks cover.  The issue’s release coincides with the launch of ‘Morning of the Earth’, a film that will always be synonymous with Tracks.  The cutback, which also features in the movie, ultimately immortalises Michael Peterson. The image becomes Tracks’ most famous cover and an iconic reference-point for ‘Morning of the Earth’. Meanwhile, Falzon’s film is credited with elevating surfing to a new level. Meanwhile, the record reviewer takes readers to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon where ‘few have seen and no-one’s been’. Coincidentally, Elfick pulls off one of the biggest coups in surf movie history and secures a Pink Floyd soundtrack for the final section of ‘Crystal Voyager’. The film within in a film is called ‘Echoes’ and features Greenough’s fabled inside the tube footage. Around the world audiences embrace Greenough’s circular-framed, psychedelic adventure. In the cover feature, future filmmaking guru, Jack McCoy, travels to ‘The Sandwich Islands’ aka Hawaii and writes of a dystopian setting that has descended into a milieu of guns, gang warfare and violence. In Australia in ‘71, many places still have a new frontier feel. John Witzig drives west, as far as Cactus in South Oz, where the landscape is beautiful in a sparse kind of way and bored surfers kill time by shooting at things – even surfboards. At Hikkaduwa, he finds uncrowded waves close to shore and people who are proud to have you stay – even if the sanitation and food poses a few risks. Simon Anderson is fresh off a win at Bells on his new design and sits down for an interview alongside Nat Young who also has a three fin model. Simon explains he coined the name ‘thruster’ because he wanted to differentiate from the pre-existing ‘tri fin’ designs. The thruster imitators are already emerging, but most haven’t quite got Simon’s design dialled yet. The question of a patent is even raised. Garth Murphy wants Aboriginal judges and a first-place prize of roasted goanna.
